The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council and acts as chief legal counsel for the city. In this capacity the City Attorney represents the Council and all city departments. Typically, the City Attorney or a deputy city attorney will handle such matters as code enforcement prosecution, the drafting or reviewing of contracts and other legal instruments and advising the Council and department heads regarding legal issues arising out of city operations. The City Attorney also oversees all outside counsel services on liability matters.
The City Attorney may not give legal advice to individuals regarding city business.
